Phillip Island and District Historical Society Museum

Located in Berninneit, this museum explores Phillip Island and district history from European encounter to the present, while acknowledging the deeper history and culture of Australia’s First Peoples. Digital stories are supported by historical artefacts and images, with displays covering local family, maritime, farming and community stories. The society dates from 1941 and its museum began in 1982; historical research enquiries, prospective members and volunteers are welcomed.

Churchill Island Heritage Farm

On Moonar’mia, this heritage farm brings together an 1872 homestead and barn, two original 1860 cottages and furniture on loan from the National Trust of Australia (Victoria). Historical grounds and regular demonstrations such as blacksmithing, cow milking, sheep shearing and working dogs help interpret the island’s farming past. Phillip Island Nature Parks also notes that Bunurong people walked the island thousands of years before European arrival.

Specialist Museums & Collections

National Vietnam Veterans Museum

This museum preserves and interprets Australian experiences of the Vietnam era and the enduring effects of war. Its collection contains thousands of objects used, found, swapped, bought, sent or brought home by Australians serving in Vietnam, including dog tags, letters, call-up notices, uniforms, medals and souvenirs. Aircraft, military vehicles and artillery provide a larger-scale context, while the Denis Gibbons gallery presents photographs made by Australian servicemen. Volunteers are welcomed.

Koala Conservation Reserve

This outdoor learning site combines treetop boardwalks and bushland trails with visitor-centre displays about koala lives and habitat. The six hectares of native bushland also support opportunities to look for birds, wallabies and echidnas. Education programmes explore koala biology, behaviour, habitat management, biodiversity and conservation, connecting close wildlife observation with the wider woodland ecosystem.

Artfusion Studio & Gallery

In nearby Anderson, the working studio and gallery of glass artist Marlene Abela and sculptor Andrew Kasper brings two creative disciplines together. The gallery and sculpture garden present steel sculpture, glass art, jewellery, wall panels and handmade gifts, offering a view of both finished works and the artists’ shared range of practice. Commissions are also available directly from the artists.

Phillip Island Gallery

This Cowes gallery presents original art and craft by Bass Coast makers. Displays include photography, painting, mixed media, woodcraft, ceramics, sculpture, jewellery, textiles, wood-turned bowls and handmade cards. The varied selection offers a compact introduction to creative work made across the wider Bass Coast, with pieces available for purchase.
